A Letter To The Herbert W. Eustace Trustees

Although written to Mr. Eustace’s Trustees in the 1990’s, this letter seems appropriate for everyone who loves the book entitled

“Christian Science: It’s ‘Clear Correct Teachings’ and Complete Writings.”

Dear H.W.E. Trustees:

Mrs. Eddy once made the statement, “He who understands my spiritual history, it’ll increase his ability to heal.” Since my files are in storage I cannot at the moment give the time and place when this quote was given, but that she said it, is absolute fact! It is worthy of our Leader, for that statement has not one thing to do with the human mind’s sense of history as the F.F.’s will show. If Robert Peel only understood this!

The points covered in this spiritual history will relate to Mrs. Eddy’s Founding Facts of Christian Science as she unfolded them in demonstration, and as they relate to our One Volume, Complete, otherwise known as “Christian Science: Its ‘Clear, Correct Teaching’ and Complete Writings” by Herbert W. Eustace, and hereafter referred to as the O.V. (One Volume).

There are those who appear to be friends of “The Clear, Correct Teaching of Christian Science” who would, in their zeal, misinterpret WHAT is being accomplished, and WHY it is necessary to present Mrs. Eddy’s Founding Facts correctly, and especially Mr. Eustace’s place in this unfolding drama. This work will be revolutionary as I’m sure you’ll agree when the “facts” become available and apparent. These facts, when understood, will keep Christian Science from disappearing from “among mortals.” (My. 197)

On page 803 of the O.V., Mr. Eustace says, “In due time all Mrs. Eddy’s actions in the establishment of Christian Science will be carefully gathered together and given to the world and will show how every step was the elimination of human beliefs for spiritual oneness.” (emphasis mine, PWA) That time is fast approaching!

You’ll undoubtedly have many questions, as these DRAFTS are presented to you. I can assure you your many questions will be answered as the work progresses. The book will be titled, “The Founding Facts of Christian Science,” with the possible subtitle, “How Mrs. Eddy Established Them.”

The vast majority of Christian Scientists simply have no idea of “the vastness of Christian Science, the fixedness of mortal illusions, and the human hatred of Truth.” (S.& H. 330:2) They’ll be greatly surprised, shocked even, when they find out how Mrs. Eddy accomplished all that she did, and said that all Christian Scientists could do likewise, since this is demonstrable Science!

Points To Consider:

In the C.S. Journal, Vol. 7, p. 455, dated Dec. 1889, Mrs. Eddy has two resolutions which are omitted from pps. 48 and 49 of our now final edition of Retro. in Prose Works, under the heading, “College Closed,” where she discusses the closing of her Massachusetts Metaphysical College. These two omitted resolutions do not in any way affect her perfect statement now in Ret. on material organization as the negation of spiritual formation, where she says, “The fundamental principle for growth in Christian Science is spiritual formation first, last, and always,” and “Mortals must learn to lose their estimate of the powers that are not ordained of God, and attain the bliss of loving unselfishly, working patiently, and conquering all that is unlike Christ.

The two omitted resolutions spiritually instruct on teaching, and trenchantly show again why Mrs. Eddy dissolved, with all the rest of her Mother Church, the “Boston designated” teaching degrees, which are unneeded human designations of God’s power. She says:

“Res., That an Institution for instruction in C.S., which is the highest, purest, and noblest of all teaching, should be of a spiritual formation wholly outside of material regulations, forms, or customs.”

“Res., That we find no platform in Christ’s teachings for such material methods of instruction in C.S., and we must come into the meekness of his methods as we rise in Christian experience.”

To reiterate, these resolutions show the dissolving of material organization for instruction in Christian Science into the “spiritual formation” for “the teaching (that is) a purely spiritual and scientific impartation of Truth, whose Christly spirit has led to higher ways, means, and understanding.” Retro. 48:27‑29.

Do you recall Mrs. Eddy’s CARD in the August, 1890, Journal? She made a public prophecy by saying, “It is my impression that at least a half century will pass away before man is permitted to render his public verdict on some of the momentous questions that are now agitating the world? Also the discussion of malicious animal magnetism had better be dropped until Scientists understand clearly how to handle this error”? Well, “Whoso Readeth, Let Him Understand” was given to the public virtually a half century later, on September 27, 1939, (check out this date from files; it may have been three weeks earlier and more simultaneous!) shortly after Hitler marched into Poland to start World War II unleashing that moral, and mortal, idiocy. And what better book for handling malicious animal magnetism than “Whoso Readeth Let Him Understand,” to use Jesus’ phraseology? Mr. Eustace proved with his works one with The Word all the way in demonstration, that he was divinely led to the understanding of malicious animal magnetism, what it is, and how to meet it. There was no outlining nor human planning in that. And it answers Mrs. Eddy’s forthright declaration given shortly before her passing when she said, “Where all students have failed is in not knowing HOW to handle animal magnetism.” “Whoso Readeth” gives the HOW, thus fulfilling her 1890 prophecy!

And you also recall Mr. Eustace stating Mr. Kimball telling the 1902 class that Mrs. Eddy emphasized the “only excuse for class instruction was to show students how to handle animal magnetism without sowing it broadcast.”

I can see why Mrs. Eddy removed these two resolutions mentioned above, if not in Retro’s earlier editions, at least when she again was led to conduct through her auxiliary college, MORE controlled teaching from 1898 to 1910. The real essence of her controlled teaching in her auxiliary college inception to July, 1903, under Edward A. Kimball, is that she forbid for three years, any Normal classes and NO officially “Boston” designated degrees. Mrs. Eddy had Mr. Kimball resign in June, 1904, “crowned with honors ‑‑ his Teacher and Leader loving him…and the race benefitted by his labors.” In this same statement of Mrs. Eddy’s (Journal, Vol. 22, No. 3, p. 184) is also given the most significant statement for the churches on teaching, and all their activity. It says, “The Magna Charta of C.S. means…the inalienable, universal rights of men,” means “wherein and whereby man governed by his Creator is self‑governed,” means “equal rights and privileges.” (My. 254:17‑12 n.p.) And of course, this means no one is higher OR lower in the scale of true being than anyone else. All have but one Mind, and that Mind, divine. It’s only the human mind that makes distinctions of good‑bad, right‑wrong, true‑false, and even higher or lower. What conceit in operation when God is the only Mind!

In the First Edition of Retro. which came out in 1891, in her article, “College Closed,” Mrs. Eddy had a short introduction as to why she was dissolving the material organization. She wrote, “…we are being led to the fuller consciousness that `man is, not will be, spiritual,’ ‑ that we are living in the spiritual world, not in one that is material.” That statement is just dynamite, and should even expose the necessity for believing in a temporary ecclesiasticism that material church organization is necessary until all arrive at spiritual understanding someday, or should expose the ecclesiastical position of the Directors who stated as late as June 2, 1947, in the C.S. Sentinel, that we are “the watchful and tender guardian of human consciousness in its ascent Godward.”

All the above just emphasizes the following:

One. That man is spiritual NOW; 2, That church is not material; 3, That teaching cannot and will not be kept within the grasp of the human mind; 4, That Mrs. Eddy would “control” all teaching until the appropriate time for the relinquishment of it through the estoppel clauses in our Manual; 5, That the only “excuse” for class instruction was to show HOW to handle animal magnetism, which our O.V. is well qualified to do according to prophecy; 6, That there is “no platform for material methods of instruction” in Christian Science, which will be true for those who live according to the Manual By‑laws, and will have “spiritual formation, first, last, and always;” 7, That instruction in Christian Science should be “wholly outside of material regulations, forms, or customs.”

The second occasion in which Mrs. Eddy made a public prophecy, was in 1901, the specific date (also in storage) of which cannot be pinned down at this time. But she was led to predict, in trying to put an end to persistent urging, “In answer to oncoming questions, will say, I calculate that about one‑half century will bring to the front the man God has equipped to lift aloft His standard of Christian Science.” The O.V. complete (1953) virtually coincides with this prophecy. Again, it was not humanly planned.

Her two prophecies both refer to one‑half century, and both refer to MAN. The first, “Before man is permitted to render his public verdict,” and the second, “the man God has equipped.” No wonder Mr. Eustace wrote in The False Prophet, and emphasized to all Christian Scientists he was in touch with since 1939, “You must understand that you are God’s man and there is only one man.” (914) In this statement he is talking to every Christian Scientist, that you must find yourself to be this man! You know there is only one man since one cause can have but one effect, you, as this man. Once this is accepted with conviction, all that man is ever doing is acknowledging, being one with, and holding to, what divine Mind is, in its appearing as consciousness; hence, “All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation.”

This is as far as I’ve gotten on this particular subject. It’s not much, but thought I’d send it, as is, just to let you know I’m still doing what God is directing. Talk it all you want once you’ve made the references your own.
